Beautiful engagement photos at Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods

Colorado Springs

Overview

Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite locations to photograph elopements, engagements, and everything in between. The location offers such a unique background and is one of the most accessible parks in Colorado! During our photoshoot we will be driving and stopping at a few spots within the park so it’s great in the winter when you need a moment to warm up in between taking photos.

Introduction to Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods Park spans over 1,300 acres and features towering sandstone rock formations that date back millions of years. Designated a National Natural Landmark, this park is free to the public and open year-round, making it accessible for photography sessions in every season. The dramatic red rocks against the deep blue Colorado sky create a striking contrast.

Best Times

Let me start out by saying sunset is gorgeous here. *Chefs kiss*. That will always be the time I recommend the most however as with all locations, it is not a bad thing if you want to do your photoshoot at a different time. The colors may just turn out a bit different from golden hour lighting. Garden of the Gods gets particularly crowded on the weekends in the summertime when all of the kids are out of school so I try to steer people towards weekdays - this is the same for a lot of the busier locations in Colorado. If you are wanting a remote location without crowds - this is NOT the spot for you. It tends to be a pretty crowded place.

Planning Your Photoshoot

Before heading to Garden of the Gods for your photoshoot, consider the following tips to ensure a successful session:

Timing: The best times for photography are typically early morning or late afternoon to capture the soft, warm light that enhances the red rock formations. Additionally, weekdays tend to be less crowded than weekends.

Weather: Colorado weather can be unpredictable, so check the forecast and dress accordingly. Layers are recommended, especially in cooler months or during early morning shoots.

Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. Some areas may involve light hiking, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Accessibility: While many areas of the park are accessible by car, some of the best photo spots may require a short hike. Be prepared with water and snacks, especially if planning to spend extended time exploring.

Permits & Fees

One of my favorite parts of this place is the fact that there is no permit fee on regular photo shoots as well as elopements under 10 people. As long as we are respectful you do not need to make reservations if you are eloping in Garden of the Gods with under 10 people. There are also ceremony sites within the Gardens in which you can reserve however they are first come first serve so spots fill up quickly!

Seasonal Considerations

Spring: Wildflowers bloom throughout the park, adding bursts of color to the red rock formations. Mild temperatures and fewer crowds make spring an ideal time for photoshoots.

Summer: Long daylight hours provide ample opportunities for photography, but be prepared for warm temperatures and regular afternoon thunderstorms.

Fall: The changing colors of autumn foliage complement the red rock formations, creating a picturesque backdrop for photoshoots. Early mornings and evenings offer the best light.

Winter: Snow dusts the red rocks, offering a unique contrast against the deep blue sky. Bundle up for colder temperatures, and check trail conditions for accessibility.
