Senior year is a huge milestone, and your senior photos should reflect who you are at this exciting stage of life. But let’s be honest: not everyone loves the idea of being in front of a camera. Whether you're worried about posing, feeling awkward, or just don't know what to expect, you're not alone! The good news? Your senior photo session can actually be a super fun, relaxed experience that brings out the best version of you.
As a Boulder senior photographer, I've worked with all types of students, from shy and reserved to bold and expressive. No matter your personality, there are a few tried-and-true ways to help you feel confident and enjoy every moment of your session. Let’s dive into five ways to make your senior photo session feel comfortable and fun!
1. Choose a Location That Feels Like You
One of the best ways to ease into your session is to choose a location where you already feel at home. Boulder is filled with incredible backdrops—from mountain trails and golden meadows to urban alleys and historic buildings. But the best location is the one that feels like a natural extension of your personality.
Love nature? Chautauqua Park or South Mesa Trail might be your vibe. More into coffee shops, murals, and a city aesthetic? Downtown Boulder has endless photo opportunities. The more connected you feel to your location, the more natural your photos will look.
Pro tip: Think about places where you already spend time, or locations that reflect your hobbies and interests. If you’re a trail runner, a shoot in the foothills makes total sense. If you’re a bookworm, let’s hit up your favorite local bookstore!
2. Bring Outfits That Make You Feel Amazing
You know that outfit that makes you feel like your best self? Bring it. And bring a few more, too.
Wearing clothes that feel good on your body and reflect your personal style can completely change how you feel during your shoot. When you're comfortable and confident in what you're wearing, it shows.
Here are a few outfit tips to keep in mind:
- Choose 2-4 outfits with a variety of styles (casual, dressy, trendy, classic)
- Avoid clothes that need constant adjusting or don’t fit well
- Bring layers (jackets, cardigans, flannels) for added variety
- Don’t forget accessories like hats, jewelry, or even your favorite sneakers
And if you’re ever unsure what to wear, I’m always happy to help you plan outfits that photograph beautifully and match your locations.
3. Don’t Worry About Posing — I’ve Got You!
One of the biggest worries I hear from seniors is, "I don’t know how to pose!"
Guess what? You don’t need to! That’s my job.
During your session, I’ll guide you through everything—from how to stand to where to look to what to do with your hands. My goal is to help you feel natural, not stiff or overly posed. I use prompts and movements that feel fun and easy, like walking, laughing, or looking over your shoulder.
We’ll keep things lighthearted, and I’ll make sure you never feel lost or unsure. Many of my seniors say they actually forget they're "posing" because they're just having a good time.
4. Bring a Hype Squad (Or Just One Chill Friend)
If having someone by your side helps you feel more relaxed, bring a parent, sibling, or best friend along! A little moral support goes a long way.
Your hype squad can:
- Help with outfit changes
- Make you laugh between shots
- Offer genuine encouragement
- Hold your stuff so you don’t have to worry about it
If crowds make you anxious, bring just one chill person who makes you feel confident and calm. It should be someone who hypes you up without adding pressure.
Bonus: Sometimes we can even sneak in a few duo photos with your BFF or sibling at the end of your shoot!
5. Let Your Personality Shine
At the end of the day, your senior photos are about capturing you.
Love to skateboard? Let’s bring your board. Obsessed with your dog? Yes, please bring them! Want to wear your band uniform or dance costume? Let’s go for it. Whether it’s a special prop, a favorite location, or a quirky idea you saw on Pinterest, I’m here to bring your vision to life.
Some seniors come in with clear ideas and Pinterest boards, and some show up ready to follow my lead—both are totally fine. The best sessions are the ones where we collaborate and lean into what makes you, you.
Your senior photos should feel less like a formal shoot and more like a fun hangout where you just happen to be getting amazing photos taken.
Bonus Tip: Trust the Process (and Your Photographer)
I know it can be nerve-wracking to try something new, especially when it feels high-stakes like senior portraits. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to show up perfect. You just have to show up.
As your photographer, it’s my job to guide you every step of the way. From location planning and outfit advice to directing poses and delivering gorgeous final images, I’m here to make this easy and enjoyable for you.
Most of my seniors tell me afterward that they had way more fun than they expected—and that’s exactly the goal.
